For students adjusting to a new language, different social rules and educational practices, school can be a daunting place. Launched in , Mercy Connect is our largest volunteer program. It recruits, trains and supports volunteers to assist school students and their families settle in Australia. After training, the volunteers offer guidance to students as they settle into the Australian school system. Our volunteers have a background in school education with many being ex-teachers. Volunteers work with the refugee students, from K, for a minimum of a half day per week. Being placed in a school after lengthy periods in a camp or a place of refuge can be a very stressful time for these young people who can often feel isolation and anxiety as they try to settle into a new culture and school system.

Starting out life in a new city can often be challenging. Do you have to do everything alone or can you find people to do things with? Obviously, different people find different things to love about any city. It depends on your age bracket, your favourite activities, where you live, whether you can speak the local language and even what your tastes are in food. Many coffee shops have communal tables where you can sit with your laptop or tablet or even just a book and start a conversation with total strangers.
Pubs and bars are also convivial places to be. Head in and buy a drink and you may find someone else who would enjoy having a drink bought for them in exchange for a hello and some conversation. The cocktails are superb, the craft beers will have your mouth watering and the atmosphere in Melbourne pubs and bars is very lively.
